Door locks are the most basic form of security in modern homes and it’s used to protect people and the property within the house from outsiders or unwanted visitors. In some homes, you are likely to find CCTV cameras, alarm systems, or even watchdogs, and other forms of security but it’s never complete without a door lock. There are different brands of door locks as well as different types of door locks without appropriate knowledge about the types, you might end up purchasing a multipoint door lock that doesn’t suit your needs. Lucky for you, you have made it to this blog post and at the end of this article, you’ll come to learn all the things you need to know about uPVC multipoint door locks.

What is a uPVC multipoint Door lock?

A uPVC multipoint door lock is a locking system that’s found on most composite and uPVC doors. uPVC multipoint door locks have a long strip that bolts into the side of the door. It’s called a multipoint lock because it locks at multiple points along the frame.

What are locking points? How many locking points does a multipoint lock have?

Locking points refer to all the mechanisms down the lock strip. The mechanisms include hooks, mushroom cam, anti-lift pins, deadbolts, centre latch, and roller cams.

Many multipoint door locks usually have three locking points. These points are placed on the door frame and they grip the door into the frame giving it an airtight security seal.

How to measure your multipoint lock

Supposing you already have a multipoint door lock on your door but for some reason, it’s not working properly or it’s not working at all and you want to change it. If that’s the case then you’ll have to learn how to measure your multipoint lock except you are hiring the services of a professional then you don’t have to worry your head about that.

Before measuring the multipoint lock, the first thing to do is to determine its brand because different brands have different measurements. Failure to do that means purchasing a multipoint door lock that isn’t identical to the rest of the locks in your home.

There are two basic measurements you should carry out when thinking of replacing your door lock. The first measurement starts from the centre of the handle/spindle down to the centre of the keyhole. The first measurement is known as Centres/PZ

The second measurement starts from the centre of the keyhole to the edge of the lock strip. The second measurement is known as Backset.

Lastly, you’ll also have to measure the locking points. For example, if you have two hooks locking points, one at the top and the other at the bottom, you can simply measure the distance between them. When you know the brand and these measurements you can easily get the exact match when you look for it as a replacement.

Multipoint lock operations

Multipoint lock operations simply refer to the means by which your door locks. There are different types of locking operations and I’ll be introducing you to them shortly.

Lever lever

The lever lever multipoint lock operation requires that the door handle has to be lifted in order to engage the locks before turning the key once to lock. You can open the door when it’s unlocked by pushing down the handle set from either side of the door.

Lever pad

The lever pad locking operation is quite similar to the lever lever and the only difference is that you’ll always need a key to gain access into the house if you are outside at the time the door was closed.

Wind up

For this locking operation, the door key has to be turned several times to engage all the locks. In the wind up locking operation, the handle is not used to lock the door.

Automatic locking

With automatic locking, the locking points automatically engage once the door is closed.
