Eco-Friendly Driving

A 2019 report shows that transport alone produces about 27% of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, according to the Office for National Statistics. There’s no doubt a single vehicle produces some pollutants, but collectively, cars can emit a huge amount of toxic greenhouse gases. Fortunately, drivers can reduce their carbon footprint by adopting an eco-friendly lifestyle that involves green driving.

The benefits of green driving include less toxic gas emissions, a lower risk of getting into an accident and reduced fuel consumption, and less maintenance or repair work. This means that you’ll be a safer and happier driver. Keep reading to learn a few eco-friendly driving tips you can embrace to protect the environment.

Prioritise Vehicle Maintenance

Keeping up with routine car maintenance checks prevents your car from breaking down. It’s also an excellent way to reduce pollution because a well-maintained vehicle works efficiently. This means your car will consume less gas and emit little to zero carbon gases. With this in mind, check your tires regularly to ensure they are inflated. Note that when the tires don’t have enough pressure, your car produces more toxic gases in the air, and your gas mileage decreases.

Besides inspecting your vehicle’s tires, change your engine oil frequently, replace worn out brake parts, change air filters, and tune up the engine. Also, change the spark plugs in your car before they wear out to reduce fuel wastage and toxic gas emissions. These tips might sound simple, but they go a long way in saving you money and protecting the environment.

Consider Your Vehicle’s Size

The best way to adopt eco-friendly driving habits is by choosing a car type and model that fits your travel needs while protecting the environment. Therefore, ask yourself how often you’ll be driving, the distance you’ll cover, and determine the number of passengers you’ll be riding with. For example, let’s say your daily commute is within a 50-mile radius. Consider buying a smaller vehicle like a compact SUV for everyday transportation and renting a larger one for long-distance trips.

Given there are many SUV options available, go through automobile reviews online. Comparing compact and small SUVs helps you learn about their dependability and fuel efficiency rate based on the experience of other consumers. It’s also wise to evaluate fuel alternatives before buying a new car. While petrol and diesel are still a popular option, consider an electric vehicle as it emits little to zero greenhouse gases.

Drive Smarter

How you choose to drive your car will have a great impact on your carbon footprint. Avoiding hard accelerations, for example, is a sure way of improving your gas mileage and reducing toxic gas emissions. Also, make it a habit not to slam on the brakes. Don’t let your car sit idle for over 30 seconds and remove unutilized cargo racks and heavy items from the car. Alternatively, share car rides if you commute a short distance every day. Sharing car rides offers many benefits, such as reduced traffic congestion and low emissions because the number of trips a car has to make is reduced significantly.

Green driving is an integral part of leading an eco-friendly lifestyle as it aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced by cars. To embrace green driving, consider buying a small-sized and fuel efficient vehicle. Also, drive slowly, opt for ride-sharing, and stay on top of vehicle maintenance.
