Cannabis as a powerful natural anti-inflammatory: Scientific evidence of the anti-inflammatory potential of cannabinoids

Cannabidiol (CBD), a significant component of cannabis, can be an effective anti-inflammatory. It is revealed by some scientific studies that have highlighted the potential of CBD, combined with the minimal side effects that the cannabinoid could cause.

Now that you know that you can legally buy CBD in the UK and Europe, in some of the best stores such as JustBob shop online, we will tell you more about some scientific studies about CBD benefits and its anti-inflammatory effects and other medical uses.

CBD is 30 times more effective than aspirin!

In 2019, research from the University of Guelph in Canada revealed the incredible potency of cannabis as an anti-inflammatory. According to the study published in Phytochemistry, the anti-inflammatory efficacy derives from the presence in cannabis of two molecules: cannaflavin A and cannaflavin B.

The researchers carried forward the previous discoveries, which already in 1985 had highlighted the anti-inflammatory potential of cannabis—experiencing the action of hemp Sativa on pro-inflammatory strains. The results of the tests revealed that the two molecules present in the plant fight inflammation, even managing to hit the pain at its point of origin.

The potency of cannabis as an anti-inflammatory was thirty times greater than that of aspirin. Furthermore, cannafavin A and B have no psychoactive effects and are not addictive.

The other scientific evidence

As early as 1985, the anti-inflammatory efficacy of cannabis was highlighted. Subsequently, numerous studies have investigated the possible applications of cannabinoids in the medical and therapeutic fields. Especially since 2017, when the World Health Organization (WHO) published a study on CBD.

The analysis showed the great potential of cannabidiol and indicated it as not dangerous, so much so that he decided not to consider it as a narcotic substance. After this stance, many scientific studies have begun to analyze medical cannabis and, in particular, CBD as potential substitutes for painkillers and anti-inflammatories.

A 2018 study cited recent meta-analyses examining the use of medical cannabis in chronic pain and provided various evidence of the analgesic and anti-inflammatory activity of cannabinoids.

Then, in 2019, researchers from the University of Insubria in Varese, Italy, had again studied the possible applications of medical cannabis and, in particular, CBD in the treatment of some symptoms.

The results obtained by the Italian researchers supported the use of cannabinoids “to stem inflammation”, confirming the usefulness of cannabis as an anti-inflammatory. Thus, despite the need to investigate the subject with further studies, the latest scientific evidence demonstrates the efficacy of cannabis and CBD as anti-inflammatory.

The side effects of ibuprofen

The studies carried out on cannabinoids, in addition to demonstrating the potential anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving action, have also highlighted the rarity of possible side effects deriving from the use of the substance.

According to clinical studies, CBD appears to be well tolerated and safe for patients who use it. On the contrary, ibuprofen, the active ingredient at the base of NSAIDs (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), widely used to treat pain and inflammation, has significant side effects.

As the National Institute of Health website points out, the most frequent side effects of ibuprofen include nausea and vomiting, diarrhea or constipation and indigestion. However, in rarer cases, dizziness, high blood pressure, oedema, gastritis, ulcer, impaired renal function, and bleeding can also occur.

For this reason, cannabinoids could represent an effective and well-tolerated alternative in treating pain and inflammation, especially in chronic problems, which would require prolonged administration of NSAIDs.

Medical cannabis: the characteristics

Everything you need to know about the quality of cannabis produced for medical use!

Medical cannabis is produced directly in Europe, in the regulated chemical and pharmaceutical factories.

The composition

In Italy, for example, with the note dated 23 November 2018, the Ministry of Health announced the availability of “batches of a cannabis-based active substance called Cannabis FM1”. It comprises dried inflorescences containing THC percentages between 13 and 20% and CBD percentages of less than 1%.

To homogenize the active ingredient, the inflorescences are first dried and then ground to ensure the presence of the same percentage of active ingredients in all doses. If, on the contrary, the flowers were left intact, each would have different content, which would imply another variable at the time of prescription.

Initially, medical cannabis was designed to replace Bedrocan, the Dutch variety, with 22% THC, but the different composition has earned a milder presence of THC. The substance is supplied in 5-gram jars to pharmacies that request it to prepare medicinal drugs, which will then be administered to the patient as indicated on the medical prescription.

When can it be used?

Medical cannabis, like the other varieties available, can be used to support traditional therapies when these have not proved effective or have caused secondary side effects. For example, it can be helpful to as:

  • Analgesic in diseases that cause pain associated to spasticity, such as multiple sclerosis.
  • Chronic pain treatment.
  • Tool to prevent nausea and vomiting caused by anticancer therapies such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy.
  • Stimulant of appetite in people suffering from cachexia, anorexia or in cancer patients.
  • Treatment of glaucoma.
  • A drug capable of reducing the involuntary movements associated with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome.
