Case studies are common college assignments that you have to deal with once or twice a year depending upon your disciplines. These assignments require you to relate theory to real-life scenarios, and for that, you will need a bit of experience. If you are a problem solver in real life, then you might not have to worry about it too much because you will be doing something like that in this paper as well.
Writing your own case studies requires some good writing skills, which most of the students today lack. The only way to overcome this snag is by practicing writing most of your time and start reading others’ writings. In this post, we will be discussing how you can write a case study from scratch? What is its structure? When should you conduct it?
What is meant by analyzing a case?
To analyze a case, you must know its purpose first! Go through the instructions and the brief you were given with the assignment. Learn about what you need to find an answer/solution to, and begin analyzing. This phase might ask you to:
– Answer questions with the support of some information from the case.
– Find out what the problem is and why it exists in a business.
– Provide alternatives based on theories or come with a solution.
– Create a strategy that can help avoid similar events in the future.
In the analysis process, you will need to go through the case several times to understand what is causing the problem or what the case is asking you to do. Read without raising questions in your mind as it will help you figure out some important points. Highlight them for later use and keep reading until you understand the main motive. Most of the time the answers to questions are hidden somewhere in the text, and simply analyzing the case can solve everything.
Usually, in college, the questions are part of the assignment, and you do not have to struggle too much to find the reason. This phase will provide you with nearly all the details you need to start writing your case study, however, you might need to interview people (connected to the organization) to get their side of the views. Additionally, you will be required to do your research and look for information in journals, books, or even ask scholars in person.
Writing A Case Study
The best method to write a case study is using the essay writing approach, and interestingly the only difference between them is the structure. The primary motive of a case study is to answer various questions using the examples presented in the case. The outline for this assignment involves three sections that are an introduction, body, and conclusion.
– Introduction
An introduction requires you to summarize the case by only writing about the crucial sections. It will involve a thesis statement that will stick to the point and should not be longer than two to three lines. In this short paragraph, you are not going to cover everything like proving facts or add arguments. It should only indicate what your case study is going to be about and what will be discussed in the paragraphs below it.
– Body
The paragraphs in this section will be directly linked to the theme, and each one of them will make a point, which will then be supported by facts. You can add theoretical information here to make your point stronger. Sometimes it is a good idea to provide an example and link it to a theory. This connection with the theory will then lead you to a conclusion. All these details will help the reader understand the point you are making and they will not need to read the entire paragraph to comprehend it.
– Conclusion
All that your case study portrays and what you have learned from it is going to conclude the case study. You will need to restate your thesis statement to help the reader recall its purpose and show them how your theory connects with the real-world problem. All the recommendations and solutions that you wish to propose are going to be added here, along with the most suitable one.
In the end, you will provide a reference list where you will cite all the sources you have gathered the details from. The structure shared follows the essay approach, which is not too much different. A typical structure for writing a case study will involve a table of contents page, an executive summary, introduction, analysis, conclusion, and appendices.
