Why Won’t My Lawnmower Stay Running

Is your lawnmower keeps dying after running for a while? Well, like any other machine, a mower can have some troubles that can cut it off. If your mowing machine is not working properly then you are on the right page.

Here, we will discuss the top reasons why won’t your lawnmower stay running. Moreover, we will also suggest solutions. So, let’s know why your mower is coming to halt and fix it.

Possible reasons why won’t your lawnmower stay running

Fuel system: There are multiple reasons why the mower is cutting off after working for a few minutes. But, you should check the fuel first. If the gas was left intact for a long time inside the tank, then it might not work well.

Water condensation is one of the primary factors of failure. Plus, the fuel might have evaporated leaving a residue that will not allow the engine to work for a long time. If you know that the mower is using old fuel, then it’s better to replace it with fresh gas. This action could solve the trouble.

The next step is to check whether the old fuel has produced some gunk or dirt build-up. Such accumulations can happen even if the mower is resting for a long time. The first place to check is the gas cap.

Take out the cap and check if the mower runs without halting. If it operates without any problem, then the gas cap might be blocked. Clean it to allow some airflow. The mower should work once you fix the cap.

Air filter: Check the air filter and make sure it’s clean. If this component is filthy, then clean and reuse it. Replace this component if you cannot wash it.

If the mower is not working even after washing or replacing its air filter, then check the fuel lines. They might be blocked. If you notice something alarming, then drain all the fuel and take out the lines. Drain the fuel tank as well as the carburettor. You can try to clean the lines or replace them depending upon the condition.

Carburettor: A dirty carburettor might be the reason why your mower won’t stay running. So, check it and see if there are any gunk accumulation. If yes, then clean this component.

Use a carburettor cleaning spray. If you cannot clean this part, then replace it. Apart from that, check the fuel filter and see if it’s filthy. Clean the filter or replace it depending upon the situation.

Ignition mechanism: We are primarily talking about the spark plug here. Dirty or end of life plugs will not support the engine for a long time and it will eventually die. So, make sure the spark plug is functional.

Take out the spark plug and check if it’s dirty. Try cleaning it. If the part is damaged, then it’s better to replace it.

Cutting mechanism: Are you trying to cut long grasses? Then, they might be troubling the blades, which can stop the engine. Raise the cutting height to see if it works. If raising the cutting level is not helping, then check the blade. Sharpen or replace the edge according to its condition.
