Top Tips for Staying Calm at Work

No matter where you work, you will experience days where you feel like you are going to lose your cool for whatever reason. It could be something as simple as skipping breakfast, or it might be that you are going through a difficult work patch, but whatever it is, feeling frustrated, down, or anxious at work is not good for anyone.

This piece will take a look at some of the few ways you can help yourself stay calm at work, so you are able to look after your wellbeing and get the work that you need to do done.

Stay Focused

If you have so much on your work plate that you do not even know where to begin, and you can feel that stress pressure rising, it can be easy to be paralysed by your workload and unable to see a clear goal in sight. If you are able to, talk to your boss about a reasonable workload, and see how you are able to break this down into manageable chunks. Instead of fretting about what you might not be able to complete or get to work on, what you actually want to be able to do is stay focused on the task in hand, one assignment at a time. If you sit worrying about your workload, you are wasting your valuable time and energy on something that can be prevented one of two ways, the second being chipping away at it, task by task and staying focused.

Take Breaks

Taking breaks is essential to your health and wellbeing whether you are feeling negative emotions or not. The rest helps our brain recover and recuperate and leaves us in a fresher headspace ready to tackle the next thing on the list. Make sure breaks are scheduled into your day, and also encourage a calming atmosphere in your workspace to make breaks easier to take. For example, have some calming plants in your office, such as an Areca Palm Tree, means that even if you only have time to take two minutes, you have an environment that is set up to make you feel relaxed and refocused.

Have Someone to Talk to

Venting is an extremely helpful tool when done to the right person at work, so having a workplace buddy you can trust and talk to when things get a little fraught can definitely help calm your feelings or nerves in whatever situation you find yourself in. You might even find your stresses are a universal issue in the workplace, and that banding together you can all create a solution.
Having someone to lean on during the times you are frustrated can help you make sure you do not say the wrong thing to the wrong person, or lash out at someone who is looking for a reason to make your life difficult. Talk to your trusted person, get it all out, and then become calm and collected for the rest of the day.
