The Link Between Gut Health and Arthritis

Over 10 million people in the UK have arthritis, according to The State of Musculoskeletal Health 2024 report. Additionally, a research by The British Dietetic Association UK shows that rheumatoid arthritis affects more than 1% of the population of the UK – which equates to more than 400,000 people suffering from joint pain and fatigue. Now, what if we told you that your gut health may be responsible for some of it? Confused? Recent studies indicate that our gut health could play a key role in joint pain and inflammation. In this article, we explore the impact of gut health on arthritis, and the practical ways in which we can offset or manage its symptoms – so it doesn’t hamper our day-to-day life.

Understanding arthritis and inflammation

Creating a deeper understanding of arthritis and inflammation, is key to further decoding the relationship between gut health and arthritis. Arthritis is a term used for a group of more than 100 conditions that affect our joints by causing pain, swelling and stiffness. Some of the most common forms of arthritis include rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.

If we look a bit deeper, rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the body’s immune system mistakenly attacks the joints, causing inflammation. This inflammation is detrimental in nature and can cause swelling, stiffness in joints, and reduction of mobility. In some cases, rheumatoid arthritis can result in joint deformity and permanent disability.

While there are multiple other types of arthritis such as psoriatic arthritis, gout and ankylosing spondylitis, what is important to note here is how inflammation plays a big role in worsening arthritis. Normally, inflammation is the immune system’s answer to fighting off any infections that are present in the body, however, in cases of arthritis, it is most often seen to do more harm than good. Case in point, rheumatoid arthritis, where the overactive autoimmune response (inflammation) attacks the body. This causes the symptoms associated with rheumatoid arthritis. The chronic inflammation in the body can erode cartilage, cause damage to the bones, and affect other tissues surrounding the joints.

Why is gut health important?

Coming onto the second part of our conversation here, gut health is another aspect that needs attention. As in the name, gut health basically describes the balance of good and bad bacteria present in the stomach. This balance is regulated based on the things we eat, our lifestyle habits and other bodily changes. An imbalance of this can lead to a condition called dysbiosis, wherein the bad bacteria outweigh the good ones. This can cause issues in the body such as leaky gut, inflammation, and even increased risk of other chronic diseases. These issues can cause problems with digestion and may even impair immune system functioning.

What’s important to note here is that the gut is one of the key regulators of inflammation in the body. A healthy gut microbiome helps regulate the body’s pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory responses.

The Gut-Arthritis Connection

There are multiple studies that link gut health and arthritis together, providing increasing evidence on how gut bacteria and arthritis are closely interconnected.

As we know, the gut is a regulator of inflammation in the body and is also responsible for most immune functioning. When issues such as dysbiosis occur, instances of autoimmune and inflammatory conditions increase. Rheumatoid arthritis is significantly dependent on the inflammatory responses of our body. 

Gut conditions like leaky gut syndrome may worsen the symptoms of arthritis. To be a little more specific, in cases of a leaky gut, the internal lining of the gut (that protects the leakage of undigested food, bad bacteria and toxins into the bloodstream) weakens over time. This triggers widespread inflammation in the body, thus giving rise to chronic inflammation. This chronic inflammation, as we already know, may trigger autoimmune disorders such as rheumatoid arthritis.

Signs your gut may be affecting your joints

Here are some key signs that your gut health is poor and could go on to impact your joint health:

  • Increased instances of indigestion, bloating, diarrhea, digestive problems and food intolerances
  • Swelling and stiffness in joints, especially after consuming certain food items.
  • Recurring joint flare-ups
  • Heightened sensitivity to pain
  • Weakened bone health and increase in fractures 
  • Constant fatigue
  • Skin issues
  • Falling ill frequently

While the above are some of the common symptoms of your gut health having an impact on your joints, what now remains unanswered is how to improve your gut health in order to manage joint pain?

How to improve gut health for joint pain relief

Improving gut health is a key tool for managing the symptoms of inflammatory arthritis and getting relief from joint pain. However, it is not a quick fix and requires constant effort. Some of the ways in which you can improve your gut health are as follows:

  1. Dietary changes:
    • Including items that are rich in fiber and adding prebiotic and probiotic foods in your diet, such as yogurt, kimchi, pulses, and nuts.
    • Reducing your reliance on processed foods such as store-bought snacks, sugar and cheese. These items trigger inflammatory responses of the body.
    • Eating more foods that are rich in natural antioxidants such as blueberries, dark chocolate, green tea and spinach.
  2. Lifestyle changes:
    • Practicing stress management techniques such as meditation.
    • Getting up from the couch and exercising frequently, even if it is just a simple jog in the park, can improve digestion.
    • Avoiding toxic substances such as cigarettes and alcohol can significantly help to reduce inflammation.
  3. Supplementation and medical help
    • Including omega-3 fatty acids in your diet and using anti-inflammatory supplements such as ginger, turmeric, ginseng and cardamom.
    • Seeking help from a dietician and rheumatologist in London to create a bespoke action plan for targeting gut health and joint pain.
