One unique force user in the Star Wars universe is Ahsoka Tano. When the Togruta female and former Jedi Padawan made her debut in The Clone Wars, she was quite controversial, but over the years, her character has undergone quite a development and is fast becoming a Star Wars fan-favourite.
Ahsoka Tano is famously known for wielding two lightsabers and being an incredible duelist. The distinctive twin white-bladed lightsabers she wields are also incredibly rare, as nothing similar has been seen elsewhere in the Star Wars canon. So how did Ahsoka Tano come about her White lightsabers? And what is the significance behind their unique white colour? Read on to find out.
When Ahsoka Tano made her debut in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, as Anakin Skywalker’s Padawan, she initially wielded a single green-bladed lightsaber, which she held in a non-standard reverse grip. Over time, she continued to hone her dueling skills with the help of Anakin Skywalker, who then gifted her a second shoto-style lightsaber.
Ahsoka wielded this second shoto lightsaber as a secondary weapon and used it to complement her original lightsaber. After being framed for treason by her friend Barriss Offee, she leaves the Jedi Order and doesn’t take her green lightsabers with her.
Her former Master Anakin, then tweaks the lightsabers and turns them blue like his own before returning them to Ahsoka once her name was cleared. Although Ahsoka receives the lightsabers, she refuses to go back to the Jedi Order.
Following the tragic events of Order 66 and Anakin’s turn to the Dark Side, Ahsoka fakes her death by burying her two blue lightsabers on Captain Rex’ burial site before going into exile.
Ahsoka does make an appearance again as a rebellion leader in Star Wars: Rebels, only this time, she was wielding two new lightsabers with distinctive white blades. The 2016 Ahsoka novel details that Ahsoka came about these white lightsabers by using the Force to heal and purify the kyber crystals of the Sixth Brother’s (the Imperial Inquisitor she fought and defeated) double-bladed lightsaber. The healing process turned the bled kyber crystals pure white, and after she placed the purified crystals in her new lightsabers, their blades took on a white colour.
Like many other lightsabers in the Star Wars universe, the white colour of Ahsoka Tano lightsabers holds great significance.
It represents her character’s growth and evolution. Ahsoka went from being a stubborn and impulsive young Padawan to a fierce leader and mentor to Sabine Wren (as seen in Star Wars: Rebels). The white colour of her lightsabers symbolises her individuality and newfound neutrality to the Force. It shows her independence from the Jedi order, traditional Jedi or Sith ideologies, and her choosing to forge her own path.
The white colour also represents purity and hope for a new beginning, which is a testament to the hope she brings to the rebellion. Some even theorize that the white colour of her lightsabers is indicative of her unmatched fighting style and mastery of the Force.
Ahsoka Tano’s white lightsabers are some of the most unique lightsabers from Star Wars, and they hold a lot of significance. They are a reflection of her character’s growth and her independence from the Jedi Order. They also represent hope and her newfound path of Force neutrality.
