Reviewing the Mazda Miata MX5: Things to Know Before Buying

There aren’t many cars that are as charming and exciting to drive as the Mazda Miata. Also known as the MX-5, this sports car is one of the most impressive convertibles since its inception in 1989. It features lively handling and steering, making it enjoyable to ride virtually anywhere, anytime. Sports convertibles often have to sacrifice some of their practicality for purity, and the Miata is no exception to that.

That being said, it’s not for everyone. If you’re on the fence on whether you should get it or not, keep reading. I’ll go into the details on the latest Miatas, and give you some information about what you should pay attention to when shopping for one, regardless of whether you want to buy a Mazda MX5 used car or a new one.

Things to Know About the Miata

My main focus will be on the 2016-2021 Miata, which is the 4th-gen car. This generation is referred to as the ND. The original Miata generation was called the NA, followed by the NB, NC, and the latest – ND.

The 4th generation of Miatas come in two versions – the regular, and the RF. The regular version features a traditional convertible soft-top roof that’s not power-operated, yet is easy to raise and lower. The RF, on the other hand, features a power-operated hard-top roof. However, the roof doesn’t completely disappear into its bodywork as you might expect, but rather, just the rear window and overhead roof panel retract. This allows the Miata RF to sport a more coupe-like profile. On the downside, it doesn’t provide the same convertible, open-air feel as the conventional Miata.

Miata Engines

4th-gen Miatas are equipped with 4-cylinder 2-litre engines. 2016-2018 models feature 155HP, whereas 2019-2021 models feature 191HP. Furthermore, they feature standard 6-speed manual transmissions, but automatics are also available. Miatas are rear-wheel-drive. While the amount of horsepower won’t necessarily impress a lot of people, it offers a smoother ride than most. Furthermore, it’s responsive and sharp.

Compared to the first 3 generations, the 4th generation Miata is lighter by about 70kg, making it easy to control and turn with. The lack of horsepower is compensated with greater feel and feedback, allowing you to drive safely on any road without exceeding the speed imposed by speed limits.

Driving Comfort

In terms of comfort, the Miata provides a smooth ride for a sporty convertible. However, you’ll probably feel the bumpy roads and take in a lot of the noise. This is especially true for soft-top versions. While the 4th generation NDs have made these things more bearable, the Miata is still a noisier car than other vehicles. But that’s to be expected from most sports cars. Some Miata models feature upgraded sport-tuned suspensions as well as limited-slip differentials in order to allow for better carving, more precision driving and enhancing traction.

Storage Capability

Unfortunately, storage isn’t a priority in a sporty convertible like the Miata. This is evident even if you just take a peek inside the cabin, where you’ll find a centre console that can’t even fit a phone. There’s a larger space between the two seats that fold down, making room for placing a small handbag, for instance, but that’s all you get. The trunk is barely 127 litres, which is enough space for two overhead aeroplane cases or overnight bags. That being said, you’ll have to carefully plan your trips and know that sometimes, you won’t be able to bring everything you may want, so pack light.

Interior

Due to its small size, the Miata’s interior is pretty minimalistic and straight to the point. It features soft-touch surfaces and most models come with attractive materials. The upper door trim is the same colours as the exterior body colour, which makes it more aesthetically pleasing. Seats are cloth, but there are leather versions available with the Grand Touring trim. Since the Miata sits relatively low, getting inside it can require dropping into the seats, especially if you’re on the taller side. Speaking of which, headroom, when the roof is closed, is scarce, and you might need to stretch your legs in front of you for the pedals. On the upside, forward visibility is clear. Though, you’ll have to pay extra attention to the mirrors to minimise side and rear blind spots.

Technology

Every post-2016 Miata features a 7-inch touchscreen located at the top of the dashboard. The 2020-2021 models come with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay integration. The touchscreen is easy to use and reach, even though the touch function is disabled when you’re moving. If you need to manipulate it while driving, you can just use the dial that you can twist and push. Other notable controls include those for air conditioning, and on the higher models, automatic climate control. There are also a couple of driver assistance controls. Generally, you get more controls if you shop for a newer model or a Mazda MX5 used with a more expensive trim level. Some of the more notable controls include blind-spot monitoring and lane departure warning. 2019 and newer Mazda Miatas include a low-speed forward collision mitigation technology as well.

Contenders

The Miata doesn’t have many contenders when you look at the price and see what you get for it. Most other roadsters are considered luxury cars, and their price tag is much higher than that of the Miata MX5. You can maybe place the Mini Cooper Convertible in the same category as the Miata, which is as nimble as the Miata, but sports a classier interior. The 124 Spider from Fiat is basically a restyled Miata with a newer engine, but it lacks the Miata’s execution and comfort.

To Sum Up

All in all, the Miata MX5 can be one of the best investments for buyers young and old who are looking to have some fun and show a lively personality. It’s a great car, at a great price tag for what it offers, and you’ll definitely stand out on the road. Of course, depending on whether you decide to go for a Sport, Club or Grand Touring, you’ll get varying commodities and equipment, but even the most basic models are feature-packed, comfortable and extremely fun to drive.
