What is a Resume Builder and Why You Need It? A resume builder is just a platform that enables you to build a professional-looking document without taking you to the internet, read through multiple spreadsheets, or sift through various folders of hard-copy documents. Rather, a resume builder puts all the work into your resume and helps you focus solely on perfecting your paper and adding content rather than polishing and editing it. There are a lot of resume builders out there, but only a handful of them are designed with the end-user in mind. So, how can you tell the difference?
1. First, look at the design and layout of the program. Look for programs that are easy to use and have a visual “UI” (user interface). For example, some of the free resume builders have a basic list style interface where you simply pick a category (skills, experience, education…etc.) and then “paste” your resumes into the appropriate boxes and hit “save.”
2. Secondly, look at the design of the templates. Is the resume builder a one-page program, with all the resume-related information organized in one big pile? Or is it a multiple-page program, with each page consisting of a bulleted list with relevant information underneath it? You need to know what sort of formatting your potential employer will be using. The best programs allow you to customize the resume page layouts so that you are not left behind when potential employers use your resume!
3. Third, check out the template descriptions and ask yourself whether or not they sound professional. You need to have a good idea of the sort of professional you’re going to be portrayed as by the resume templates. You don’t want to end up looking “homemade.” You want professional-looking resumes with clean, clear text, good grammar, and proper punctuation!
4. Fourth, check out the visual CV templates. If a large image file is provided by the free plan, you need a decent graphic design program to handle this. The visual CV is very good if you just want to overview your skills and experience. If you need more detail and want to develop a visible picture of yourself, a good designer can also help you here. The best graphic designers offer both “static” and “dynamic” images. A static image will remain constant across multiple versions of your resume, whereas a dynamic graphic will change subtly depending on the position/brand/position you are trying to portray.
5. Fifth, remember that all good resume-builders have one thing in common. You need a good template! If the template you choose falls short of meeting all your needs, then you need a better one. There are plenty of free resume builders out there, so don’t worry.
6. Sixth, don’t go cheap on your visual CV and forget about Excels. While the free plan may work fine for you, keep in mind that a great designer does not have to spend lots of money to make their template excels! The majority of good designers have an excellent skill set and a few good software programs on hand. Keep this in mind when shopping for a good designer, and don’t fall short when it comes to Excel and visual CV templates.
7. Seventh, remember that you want to find the best builders. This might mean spending some time on forums and asking around for recommendations. One thing you can count on, though, is people’s honest reviews and recommendations. This is the best way to separate the good from the bad, and you’ll know which the best builders are by reading the testimonials of those who have used their services in the past.
