Making a Beautiful and Useful Wooden Bottle Opener

Homemade bottle opener nail made from wood.

Almost anything may be turned into a bottle opener. Lighters, jewelry, bullet casings, caps, sandals, and I’m sure you can add to the list are among the items I’ve seen. Probably all of those openers function perfectly. However, making your own wood bottle opener is a fun hobby that will always leave a lasting impression on your family and friends. Global Source Company sell many wood bottle opener products.

This opener’s mechanics are nothing new. Several quite simple ones use the same fundamental structure as this nail and stick combination.

A stick with a nail through it won’t impress anyone, though. Instead, I’ll demonstrate how to use a nail and a little piece of wood to create a finer model. Even your bottle cap will be caught by it as you remove it, and it will stick to your refrigerator for quick access whenever you need it. Global sourcing provides a very good product of wooden bottle openers.

Tools & Materials required: a small piece of sturdy wood (I chose Walnut)

  • 8mm-diameter magnets,
  • 3′′ common-head nails
  • Jigsaw, tools (or a coping saw)
  • Sanding drum and a Dremel (or just regular sandpaper)
  • Drill/driver
  • 6mm and 8mm drill bits
  • Sticky gun

Opening a bottle can be done in a plethora of ways. You may use a piece of paper, a water bottle, or even your forearm if you feel very brave. But when you can create your bottle opener for free, why would you do that? You can make this fantastic bottle opener using a piece of wood, a common nail, and two tiny magnets.

What better bottle opener than this one with a rustic appearance to open that bottle of a locally made artisanal bottle? Consider making this gorgeous and practical wooden bottle opener this weekend if you’re yearning to create something.

You’ll discover how to construct a wooden bottle opener in this article. They are quite straightforward but highly intriguing; you only need a wood block and a nail.

How to Make a Bottle Opener at Home

For this project, I used hardwood because I already had some on hand (spare Walnut from installing hardwood floors). I anticipate using this opener a lot, and Walnut should stand up nicely. The main drawback is that hardwoods need more effort to drill and cut, and you must take extra care to avoid scorching the wood.

The measurements are adjustable. But I’d advise sticking quite close to what I’ve outlined here. My bottle opener is 5 inches long, 1 inch broad, and 3/4 inches deep. I taped everything with masking tape to prevent tearing out when making cuts and to make an outline.

I used a jigsaw, table saw, and miter saw to carve out the form. Many of you might not have access to such tools. A coping saw will work just as well but considerably more slowly.

I then used a cordless grinder with a sanding pad and a Dremel with a sanding drum to sand each side. I lightly softened all the corners to make it more pleasant to handle.

Magnets have a stated 8mm diameter.

I bought some tiny, cheap magnets, but you can make do with refrigerator magnets. My magnets have an 8mm diameter or 5/16′′.

Drilling holes in the bottle opener’s front and rear.

I drilled holes into the front and rear of the bottle opener with caution. I placed the bottle opener’s magnet towards the top because it is there to snag the bottle cap. I positioned the second magnet a little lower so it may be used to hold the refrigerator opener.

A nail-ready hole on the top.

Additionally, I drilled a 5/32″ hole for the nail on the top. A drill press would have been ideal for this phase, but I could still achieve decent results with a drill/driver.

Smearing some hot glue on.

Pick a 3″ regular nail.

I used a 3′′ common nail for the project, and you can see in the image that the nail head is flat on both sides (as opposed to a more convex underside).

To make a simple bottle opener, use nails.

  • Use a hammer to bend the nail.
  • I used a clamp and a vise to gradually bend the nail into a straight angle since I didn’t want to bend it with a hammer.
  • Placed the nail in place after adding a little amount of hot glue.
  • I pushed the nail in after adding a dab of hot glue, just like I did with the magnets.
