How to Successfully Hire New Employees

New employees can help to rejuvenate a business. They can help to bring more cohesion to a team, and they can bring a positive attitude to the table. When it comes to successfully hiring new employees, you want to be sure that you undertake the process as thoroughly as possible. After all, you want to invest in new employees, and you want them to invest in the business too. 

Look at What Roles You Need Filling

Before rushing out and posting job adverts, you must first establish what roles need filling and why. For example, do you need a new manager as the old one has been promoted or moved on to another business? Do you need more customer service and support staff as you are expanding your operations? Are you looking at creating new roles to keep up with demand, or are you looking to expand? When you know what roles you need filling, you can then go ahead and start looking at roles and responsibilities.

Creating Roles and Job Descriptions

To hire the right employees, you are going to need to create accurate roles and job descriptions to accompany adverts. If you are not creating or introducing new roles and job descriptions, you will find that problems occur. New employees will struggle to establish where their place is within the business, and they will struggle to give 100% to the role. When you have clear and concise job descriptions and roles every employee (both new and old) knows where they stand, and what is expected of them.

Create a Recruitment Process

Even if you are only looking at hiring once or twice a year you will still benefit from creating a recruitment process. A recruitment process will give you an action plan to follow. It will lay out what you need to do and by when. When you have a recruitment process to follow you can ensure that recruitment is both fair and transparent. You can also be sure that all candidates get equal opportunities. When you are looking at creating a recruitment process always look at how you have recruited in the past. What has worked well for you, and what has got you great results, then how can this be incorporated into a new recruitment plan/process?

Be Prepared for Change and Embrace It

With new employees you will experience change, and so will everyone working within your business. It is imperative that change is welcomed and embraced at all times. If change is not embraced you will find that you may struggle to hire the right employees and even integrate them into the existing team. When you are ready for change it becomes much easier to implement and retain. If you are opposed to change, then you will find that your recruitment drives become stagnant and non-productive. So, be prepared to change processes if they are not working. Be prepared to turn to outsourcing to help your efforts and be prepared to invest in the recruitment and retention of new employees.

Engage with HR Professionals and Consultants

When you commit to hiring new employees there are lots of legalities, rules, and procedures that you must adhere to. To ensure that you meet your responsibilities, and to ensure that you give employees a fair deal you may find it beneficial to engage regularly with HR professionals. HR consultants and experts will be able to advise you on TUPE regulations to ensure that employees are treated fairly and legally at all times. HR consultants or professionals should be seen as an integral part of your business and as part of hiring and welcoming new employees – especially as your business grows and develops. Without HR professionals on your side to help, you may well find that you end up diverting your time. You may end up spending too much energy and money successfully hiring and keeping new employees.

Compatibility and Great Working Relationships

To make sure your new hiring is as successful as it can be, it is important to focus on compatibility. It is also wise to focus on building great working relationships. After all, you want employees to stay with your business and grow accordingly. To ensure compatibility and working relationships are built and strengthened, you need to listen to your employees. You also need to be sure that you communicate clearly and effectively at all times. If new employees feel that they have been overlooked or not listened to, you may find that you end up with a high turnover. Ultimately this is not good for efficiency or productivity, so ensure you always make new employees (and existing ones) a priority.
