Cyclists, Pedestrians and Road Risk: Are UK Roads Safe Enough?

Across many areas of the UK, more and more people choosing to walk or cycle as a means to getting from A to B. Petrol and diesel prices are on the up, and awareness of the environment and health is more and more at the forefront of peoples thinking. To one degree, it seems like we are moving in the right direction. There however remains one key question: are roads in the UK safe enough for those not using a vehicle?

Cyclists and pedestrians are referred to as “vulnerable road users” with good reason. Drivers and passengers have more room for error and control inside a vehicle, there is no such luck for those on two wheels or getting by on foot. Even traveling at slow speeds, the results of an accident are catastrophic. Figures show that pedestrians and cyclists are responsible for a large percentage of serious road accidents in the UK each year, even though they make up a smaller percentage of road users.

Urban areas are indeed places of risk. The heavy traffic of delivery vans, buses, and automobiles struggling to share the same road is a danger for anyone who is driving. With the increase of bicycle lanes in our urban centres, there are still a number of roads where cyclists are forced to share the road. A high-risk zone seems to be intersections and roundabouts, especially in situations where visibility is poor and there are no accompanying road amenities to support cyclists.

A new challenge emerges with the advent of electric vehicles. Not only are they environmental-friendly and quiet, but their noises, particularly at low speeds, can be difficult to detect. Though regulations are making it mandatory for them to be installed in new vehicles, there are concerns about how people are adapting to them.

On the brighter side, good infrastructure planning truly works too. Reams of data exist to demonstrate that prioritized bike lanes, well-defined road crossings, and 20 mph speed limits are quite effective, not only at limiting the occurrence of road accidents but also in limiting the extent of accidents that can take place. There are safer roads, of course, but there are roads with clean road air too!

However, infrastructure itself is not the magic bullet. The question of driver interaction remains paramount. Things such as speeding, distracted driving, and failure of drivers to check mirrors before turning have been contributing factors in cyclist and pedestrian accidents. However, many of these issues may also be addressesable with correct education and rules.

Such accidents can be really tragic and devastating, and when you are talking about severe and deep injuries like head injuries and spine injuries with multiple fractures, the recovery can just go on and on. It’s not just the physical; there can also be a huge financial and emotional toll. In such moments, it becomes vital to know your rights, particularly with road traffic accidents and even car accident claims.

In the event that injuries are significant and the repercussions continue, seeking compensation for serious injuries will assist in the additional care required and the lifestyle adjustments that may be made at home. Although it is in our best interest to promote prevention, it is also reassuring to know that there is support if an accident does happen, building a fairer and stronger society for the future.

In designing streets that are safer for cyclists and other pedestrians, every person’s contribution is crucial. For instance, designing roads to prevent accidents between vehicles and other road users is just as important as supporting initiatives and ensuring drivers are cautious and careful. We have to carry on with efforts to push for transport systems that are not just safe but reliable as well.

There are many environmental and health benefits of active travel. If the UK is committed to reducing carbon emissions and changing behaviours to promote sustainable and more energetic travel, road safety needs to be at the heart of this. So, safe roads are not just about road safety – they are about public health and social justice issues too! By making road safety the priority, we are setting the course for roads that work for everyone.
