5 Mind-Bending Movies to Watch on Netflix

So the weekend’s approaching, and you are looking for something freaky and weird to watch. Something that will leave you analysing what you watched for hours and days.

Sounds easy to find, but the immense and endless library that Netflix has can be overwhelming and leave you feeling like a kid in a candy store. How do you sort the wheat from the chaff and find that perfect mind-bending movie to watch?

Well, don’t you worry. We’ve got five flicks that will keep you riveted and leave you with many things to think about. Buckle up! It’s going to be quite a ride.

Horse Girl

If surreal visuals and the inner workings of the human mind seem like something you’ll be interested in, this is one flick you will definitely love.

Horse Girl follows the story of a girl with a – self-proclaimed – overactive imagination and a penchant for horse-related things as her musings start to fuse with her reality and items become more and more difficult for her to tell apart.

The movie has a strong cast with stars such as Alison Brie, John Ortiz, and Molly Shannon and is a truly mind-bending watch that is sure to leave you titillated and your mind teased.

The visual cues of when the protagonist is and is not lucid to reality are a very subtle but appreciated touch and add to what is already a visually stunning film.

Buster’s Mal Heart

This one is for the people who like their mysteries a little weird. This surreal mystery title follows a mysterious mountain man called Buster as he survives by breaking into empty vacation homes and has earned his monicker by regularly calling into radio shows.

Follow along with this strange man, addled with dreams of being lost at sea and flashbacks of his former life and family. Delve into the mystery of how and why he ended up like this and what is to follow.

This one has all the hallmarks of a mind-bending film. A good storyline, mystery, surreal undertones, and a heaping helping of visuals and good acting will ensure you’re glued to your seat.

The Cloverfield Paradox

If Sci-Fi thrillers are more your speed, the Cloverfield Paradox is that and more. Set in a dystopian future where Earth is on the brink of a global war due to an energy crisis, the Cloverfield station is tasked with discovering a source of energy sufficient to avert the impending violence. What they end up creating instead is a portal to another dimension.

Now, this band of scientists has to find a way back to their own reality.

This thriller has a dash of horror added to the mix for good measure. And we feel it’s the perfect watch if you want something that’ll make you question reality, scare you just enough, and leave you with more unanswered questions than when you started watching.

I’m Thinking of Ending Things

Although the title makes it sound like one of those sad sobfests that revolve around a female protagonist’s struggles with a bad relationship, this film is definitely one book you shouldn’t judge by the cover.

Based on Ian Reid’s best-seller, the movie follows the story of a young woman who accompanies her new boyfriend to his parent’s farm only to end up stuck with them in a snowstorm. This film revolves around the last journal written by the main character, Jake, who suffers from a severe mental illness.

Viewers are treated with an odyssey that sees her question what she knows about her boyfriend and herself. This introspective title is a treat to watch and a definite mind-bender.

The Platform

Unlike some of the other titles covered in this list, this one is hard to pigeonhole into a genre. It really is a novel concept as a film. And what a mind-shattering concept it is!

A vertical prison with two inmates per level and a single platform full of food, each floor gets two minutes to gorge itself before it moves down. The concept looks pretty plain at face value, but the more you dig into it, the more it messes with your brain.

This poignant and well-acted portrayal of what humans do when faced with such unique adversity and how human nature and primal instinct fight each other is very well worth a watch.

And, scene!

There you have it. From Horse Girl to The Platform; five excellent titles to add to your must-watch list! Having enjoyed each one of these masterpieces, we are sure our picks will scratch your itch to have your brain teased and perplexed in all the right ways!
