Teddy bears have always been a part of our lives. No matter how old you are, you must have that one teddy bear from your childhood that you still cherish. Though there are many options to avail, a brown teddy bear is the most common and preferable one.
They are often the very first friend we make, except for the loving arms of parents. They are the very first thing we tend to search for when we look for comfort and even cuddle when we need one. All that you need to do is go to the site of a popular teddy retailer and buy one.
Therefore, it is not surprising when they are given to newborn babies as a first toy. They are keepsakes to remind us of our childhood as we grow up.
But, that is not all for our love affair with teddies. Studies have shown that teddies even often accompany students to the university, and even businessmen will quietly hide one in a suitcase when traveling away from home for work.
But the question is, what makes them so enduringly popular and what are the benefits of having a teddy bear while growing up?
The importance of teddy bears in our growing up process.
Sarah Holmes, Director of Merrythought, the only remaining family manufacturers of hand-made teddy bears in the UK, once stated that “teddy bears are still popular as ever, despite the wide range of various themed toys and electronic gadgets available in today’s market.”
She even said she believes that teddy bears are timeless toys. They are generally given to the young children for keepsake. They are preferred because of the comfort and companionship we as humans search for. In addition, they also work as a friend, we can talk too, which is vital in our growing up process.
As we tend to name the things around us, children even do the same. They give them distinct names and even tend to build a whole persona for them in their minds. Because of their very own nature, teddy bears encourage an entire imaginative play in our minds.
Teddy bears have a depth of character, which is lacking in other toys. Thus, playing with one during our childhood helps us stimulate and develop our imagination and realize our emotions.
The backstory of the teddy bears
The story of the origin of teddy bears started way back in the 1900s.
It started when American President Theodore Roosevelt, who was known as Teddy, spotted a bear while he was on a hunting trip. But, he didn’t have the heart to kill that innocent animal. His empathy towards that creature even inspired a series of satirical cartoons in an American newspaper. This urged Morris Michtom, a New York businessman, to manufacture the first-ever ‘Teddy’s Bear’ that later became known as a teddy bear.
Within a couple of years, the sale of teddy bears skyrocketed. After which, he founded a whole new soft toy company that would entirely be dedicated to producing Teddy bears.
Today, tons of teddies are sold every year. They are even used as gifts and are even made to commemorate special events or occasions. Holmes believes there isn’t any chance of them becoming extinct, at least not soon.
She even said, “Children often get bored easily while playing with themed or electronic toys because they have limitations. However, in the case of teddy bears, there are no limits to how you can play with them. It is like a blank canvas for the children.”
On an ending note
Today, teddy bears have become such an essential part of life that we even have a whole day dedicated to them, known as the National Teddy Bear Day, worldwide. Every year on 9 September, we observed this day, celebrating the special relationship we develop with that bear enduring for a lifetime.
So, why wait further and be deprived of such an enduring relationship? All you need to do is go to the site of your choice and choose from the fantastic collection and get yourself and your loved ones a fluffy brown teddy bear today.
