Ways You Can Help Your Baby’s Development

A parent’s most pressing concern when they have a new baby is the child’s health and development. Babies are all different and their development is dependent on their own individual genetics and upbringing. However, there are common stages of human development that most babies are expected to meet at certain ages. While uncontrollable factors such as genetics, illnesses, and finances can impact a baby’s potential development, there are also ways to give them the best possible start in life and ensure that they grow at a healthy rate. Take a look at some of the main ways that you can help your young child grow and develop to lead a happy and fulfilling life.

Walking

Children start to take their first steps around the ages of six and eighteen months old, although your baby might be different. You can encourage your child to take some assisted steps by holding them up and gently walking to guide them along. Babies usually start to pull themselves up on furniture and use their arms to keep them upright while taking sidesteps. You can position items of soft furniture at a suitable height and distance to encourage your child to walk between them or you can enlist the help of someone else to help your child take steps from one person to the other.

Talking

Speech and understanding are hugely important skills for children to learn. Being able to communicate effectively will help them to make their feelings clear and express their thoughts coherently. You can start to help your baby by talking to them while you do activities. Babies’ brains are more capable of understanding words than their mouths are capable of repeating sounds, so just because your baby isn’t speaking doesn’t mean they can’t understand what you are saying to them. Most babies start to say their first words between the ages of twelve to eighteen months old.

Feeding and Meals

A huge part of taking good care of your baby is making sure that you feed them healthy and nutritious food to help their body develop. Babies go through stages of what they can eat, since when they are born, they cannot handle solid foods. You should only start introducing soft solid foods to your baby around the age of six months old, and even then, you should go at their own pace. Teaching your baby how to eat and eventually use utensils independently can take some time and practise. A bibado weaning spoon can make the experience easier and more fun for you and your baby.

Playing
Although play is often pushed aside as children grow into teens and then adults, it is in fact an essential component of psychological and physical development. When you play with your baby, you are helping their brain to connect ideas and understand concepts about the world. It is also an incredibly important bonding exercise that brings babies and caregivers closer together. If you want to help your baby to develop into a happy and healthy adult, play is essential.
