Top Tips for Organising a Birthday Picnic

Spring has finally arrived, and although it still might be a couple of months before the weather gets consistently warmer, it’s still nice to step outside and breathe in the fresh air. If you or someone you know is lucky enough to have a birthday this season (or in the summertime), you might decide to take the celebrations out into the sunshine. Taking a beautiful picnic out to your local park or driving out into the countryside somewhere is a lovely way to celebrate a summery birthday, and if this idea sounds appealing to you, here are some tips to help you organize it.

1. Be Prepared for the Changing Weather

Even if the weather forecast has promised bright sunshine all day, it’s still a good idea to be prepared for an unexpected shower or a drop in temperatures. Taking an extra layer of clothing in case it gets chilly and an umbrella in case there is rain is a smart move and will stop your picnic from becoming uncomfortable. You could even pack a small pop-up gazebo to take with you in case of rain or to offer some shade from the sun.

2. Carefully Plan the Menu

Picnics are always a great opportunity to graze on some tasty foods, but when it’s a birthday picnic, why not make it extra special? You could even choose to replicate an afternoon tea-style menu, with dainty finger sandwiches and sweet treats, and a birthday cake is a must! Other picnic goodies include dips like hummus or tzatziki, pork pies, quiches, crisps, olives, stuffed peppers, fresh salads, and anything else that will travel well and can be eaten cold. 

3. Don’t Forget Celebratory Drinks

As it’s a birthday picnic, bringing a bottle of sparkling wine to toast the birthday celebrations can help to make it feel all the more special. Sitting on the ground for long periods, particularly when it’s uneven, can leave you feeling stiff and sore, so think about bringing along cushions with you, or packing up some picnic chairs if you don’t want to be on the floor at all.

Finally, while eating great food and enjoying each other’s company is all part of the fun, think about other ways you can stay entertained when you’re on your picnic. Bringing some portable speakers with you for some background music is a good idea, just remember to be courteous of others around you if you are in a busy picnic spot. You might also want to bring a frisbee, badminton racket, or a ball with you for some fun outdoor games and get a birthday competition going.
