The Perfect Place for Whale and Dolphin Watching

There aren’t many things more exhilarating than getting up close and personal with the natural world. Being out in nature can give us a fresh perspective and allow us to better appreciate the world around us.

If you’re heading to southern Ireland from the US, you’ll have a fantastic opportunity to get out there and spot some wildlife. It’s the perfect place to catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins. Read on to learn more.

Where Should You Go?

If you want to get out there and spot some whales and dolphins, the southwest region of Ireland, West Cork in particular, is the perfect place to go. There are plenty of things to do in West Cork, but many visit the region because of its rich natural life.

The southwest coastline is full of places to explore. There are countless small inlets and bays, as well as huge expansive beaches with fantastic views over the ocean. If you’re looking to spot marine life, few places could be more perfect.

You could stay in Cork itself, as accessing the countryside is easy. However, for a true Irish experience, consider staying in a more remote holiday home. These luxury spaces are ideal, you’ll be able to establish a base directly in the middle of the great outdoors.

What Whales and Dolphins Can You Spot?

Ireland’s waters are absolutely teeming with marine life, and the whales and dolphins are the stars of the show.

Whales are the largest mammals on earth. These huge creatures are truly awe-inspiring, and catching a glimpse of one in real life can be a life-changing experience. As many as 25 different whale species have been spotted off Ireland’s coast, including Humpback whales, Minke whales and Fin Whales. Even the Blue whale, the largest animal on earth, has been seen in Irish waters.

Dolphins are like the playful younger cousins of whales. These cheerful animals can be seen frolicking and jumping in the water and will often chase boats out of sheer curiosity. Many different species of dolphin can be spotted when you’re in Ireland, including Common dolphins, Risso’s dolphins and Bottlenose dolphins. Dolphins are highly intelligent, so don’t be surprised to see them come over to investigate your boat!

What Other Wildlife is There

If you’re visiting Ireland from the US, you will no doubt be looking forward to spotting whales and dolphins. However, these aren’t the only kinds of marine life you can see.

The coasts are home to numerous marine birds, none more beloved than the puffin. These colourful little birds are a joy to watch and can be seen in spring and summer.

You might also be lucky enough to spot a basking shark. These huge fish can grow to over 20 feet long. Don’t be afraid, though, as basking sharks are completely harmless. They’d rather eat plankton than people! Check start.watchown.tv/activate.

Conclusion

Southern Ireland is the perfect place to spot whales and dolphins. Take a boat trip from the coast and there’s a good chance you’ll see these amazing creatures, as well as a number of other incredible marine animals.
