Protect Your Home by Preparing for Winter Weather Now

The weather has definitely taken a colder turn in the last few months. Many news channels have covered high wind speeds, flooding, and temperature fluctuations, and it’s not even wintering yet!

By preparing for winter weather, you can keep your home safe and secure during the colder months. And if you’re expecting snow and ice, make sure you have snow removal equipment at the ready.

One of the most important things you can do to prepare for the winter season is to have a plan. Preparing for winter weather is easy if you follow these tips.

Check Your Roof for Leaks

Check your roof for leaks in the winter before the snow hits. Many people believe that checking their roof for leaks during the summer is enough, but this isn’t the case.

If the snow and ice build-up on your roof during the winter months, water can leak through your roof and into your home. This has the potential to cause internal damage, such as the build-up of mould, and might even affect your electrical wiring.

Make sure your roof is in good condition and you can easily access it to check for leaks. You can hire a home inspector to inspect your roof and offer you advice on how to fix any problems.

Clear Your Gutters

It’s also advisable to clear your gutters and downspouts before winter. You can do this in the autumn or in the spring, but it’s best to do it before the winter weather hits.

Snow and leaves can pile up in your gutters and downspouts during the winter months. It can also melt and freeze over time, causing it to harden and create a clog.

Clear your gutters and downspouts to get rid of any debris and to keep them free of ice.

Keep an Eye on Your Drains

To avoid frozen pipes and drains, it’s vital that you check them before winter hits. Frozen drains and pipes can cause a huge amount of damage to your home, making you lose heat and potentially leading to a flood. If you suspect a blocked pipe or drain, you can hire a professional plumbing service, like the Guildford drainage company, to evaluate for blockages.

During the winter, drain water can freeze and become a solid block of ice. If this happens, water can’t go through it and will overflow, which is a risk for flooding.

Check your drains and pipes regularly during the winter to make sure they don’t freeze. You can use water-heating products to keep them warm, but make sure you only use them when you need to.

Another area you should keep an eye on is street drains. If your street drains are covered by leaves, snow, or ice, it can cause them to clog or overflow. This can lead to flooding, which could damage your property and your neighbour’s property.

Protect Windows and Doors

Protecting your windows and doors is also a good way to prepare for winter weather. This means doing more than ensuring they are draught-proof.

To protect your windows and doors in the winter months, you can apply water repellent to them. This will keep snow, ice, and rain from building up on them, and it will prevent them from leaking.

If you find any damage to your windows and doors, get them fixed before the winter. If you can’t get them fixed, you could end up with a leaky window or door that will need to be replaced.

Prepare for Winter Weather Now

We can’t control the weather, but we can prepare for it. By following these tips and preparing for the winter season, you can keep your property safe and secure.
