How to Create a High-Impact PR Box That Influencers Actually Want to Share

A PR box that is not shared is merely an expense for shipping. Deep down, most brands realize this. However, they still send boxes that are lucky if they are photographed once for a obligatory Instagram story. The distinction between a box that receives a full unboxing video and one that’s tossed into the recycling bin isn’t its budget. It’s the intention. Every detail must be conceived as if the box is a content masterpiece on its own, tailored for an audience that the sender will never have contact with.

Start With One Clear Goal

Before you go gung-ho on sourcing product or designing the label, sit down and write out what you want this box to do. This is going to be its entire reason for existing. It seems logical, but most brands don’t do it. They end up with boxes that sort of half try to do everything – announce a new product, build a relationship, drive a hashtag, and generate sales leads. The result is boxes that look unfocused. Cluttered.

Choose one. If it’s a launch box maybe the goal is just to make a lot of internet noise. If it’s a relationship box the goal is deepening a relationship with five creators you’ve worked with before. If it’s a UGC box for a new product line the goal is just content and lots of it. Those sorts of goals should be what determines what goes in, what goes on the outside, what the note says, and what you ask the influencer to do after the fact. They can film themselves enjoying the product but you are not giving them anything too sexy to shoot.

If it’s a launch goal, the box should feel like an event. A relationship goal, it should feel warm and personalized. A content goal should focus on visual drama and give them multiple vignettes of awesome to shoot.

Research The Person, Not Just The Niche

Using standard packaging indicates to influencers that they are part of a large mailing list. This is not a good way to initiate a relationship and usually not a good way to obtain a post either.

Before you even think about what to put in a box, invest time in reviewing each influencer’s recent content. Consider their aesthetic: natural/muted palette or vibrant/contrast colors? Which similar products have they posted about on their own feed in the last three months? Do they tend to make long unboxing videos, multiple posts, or just a couple of insta stories? Have they mentioned anything recent in their life they are outright passionate about or can’t get enough of: a hobby, pet, city?

Remember the rule of this step is not to get too personal but to show that you care. An influencer who reviews outdoor gear should not receive the same box as a fashion-forward creator in a major city, even if your product works for both. Subtle differences in presentation, item selection, and the tone of the note you include can signal genuine consideration – and that triggers reciprocity. When someone feels genuinely seen, they’re more likely to share.

Design The Unboxing Moment First

This is the point at which most brands approach things backward. They pre-determine what products they want to include, then choose a box size and type and afterward try to engineer the unboxing. Instead, design the unboxing experience first, then build backward to what needs to go inside to support it.

Think about what the influencer will see when they first lift the lid. That first visual moment is what gets filmed. A sea of loose bubble wrap and foam peanuts does not make a compelling opening shot. A structured layer of tissue paper in your brand colors, with a handwritten note on top and the hero item visible just underneath it, does.

Choose a distinctive color scheme that matches your brand identity and holds together visually across every element – the box exterior, the tissue paper, the card, any filler material. Forty percent of consumers are likely to share a photo of a package on social media if it features branded packaging. That stat applies to regular customers, not just influencers. For creators who are already primed to share, the visual quality of the packaging is even more important.

Think in layers. The influencer should discover things as they unpack, not see everything at once. Each layer should offer something new – a texture, a scent, a small surprise. That progressive reveal is what keeps an unboxing video interesting.

The Hero Item Is Doing Most Of The Work

Every package needs a hero item – something the influencer is excited to get and/or actually wants to use. This is where most brands default to a logo-printed item that looks good in a flat lay and never shows up in organic content again. We’ve found wearable items work way better than decorative items here because they keep showing up.

Custom socks are a really strong example of this. They’re useful, they photograph well on just about any background, they fit nearly all recipients, and they come out again every laundry day when the influencer puts away the rest of their loot. Working with a custom branded sock company lets you design a product that happens to naturally include your brand colors or a pattern that suits the campaign you’re planning, or even to design a pair of socks for that specific creator (and it’s a small detail they’re super likely to mention since it’s so obviously thoughtful). The best hero item is one that keeps appearing in future content without being prompted.

Whatever you end up landing on, it should feel more like a gift than like a product sample. There’s a real difference between those two things and influencers can immediately sense which one you’re offering.

Personalization That Actually Lands

A personal, handwritten message remains one of the highest-ROI plays in influencer marketing, and very few brands take advantage of it. Not a printed card with a script font and a handwriting-style typeface – an actual handwritten note, even if it’s short.

Reference something specific. Mention a video they made that you watched. Note something they’ve talked about publicly that connects to your brand. If you’re sending to a creator who recently moved to a new city, acknowledge the move. If they’ve been vocal about a cause your brand supports, make that connection explicit.

This level of detail doesn’t require a huge research investment per influencer. A five-minute scroll through their recent content is usually enough to find one or two specific hooks. A note that references their actual life takes maybe three sentences. The result is that the influencer feels like a person your brand cares about, not a name on a spreadsheet. That emotional response is what turns a polite story mention into an enthusiastic unboxing video.

Build In A Reason To Share

The influencer’s audience has to be part of how you think about this. The box isn’t just for the creator – it’s a piece of content their followers will consume, and it needs to give the influencer something worth saying.

A limited-edition item works well here. If the influencer knows that what they’re holding isn’t available to the public yet, or is a run of only a few hundred units, that exclusivity becomes part of the story they tell. A unique discount code for their audience serves double duty – it gives the creator something to offer their followers, and it gives you a trackable conversion metric.

A sneak peek at an upcoming product, a prototype, an early sample – these all create a moment of genuine excitement that an influencer can translate into engaging content. The message you’re sending is: you’re seeing this before anyone else. That’s worth posting about.

Include your branded hashtag and your social handles somewhere visible in the box – on the card or on a small insert – without making the whole thing feel like an instruction manual. Keep the call-to-action simple: one ask, clearly stated, that doesn’t feel like an obligation. “Tag us in your unboxing” is direct without being demanding.

Logistics Matter More Than Brands Admit

When a beautifully designed box shows up all dented and mishandled, the brand experience gets off to an immediate bad start. But shipping logistics are often an afterthought to the fun, creative process of designing the box, so here’s how to make them work better for you.

Take the time to research the sizes carriers prefer to keep rates down (and avoid surcharges for boxes that aren’t compatible with sorting equipment), then pick the smallest dimensions you can pack your contents into. Don’t leave things rattling around in there, but if you can go a little lighter on the crinkle paper and get away with a slightly smaller box, do that.

Also, remember that if you’re sending anything that needs to be kept cold, fit a box within a box, etc., this will all impact your design. Better to plan for that from the get-go than to find yourself scrambling for a solution two weeks before ship date.

Next, remember that every single peanut or bubble you add to that box is one more piece of debris your influencer is going to have to clear out of the way to get a good shot of your product on their camera. They will not be happy with you. Neither will their followers when they point it out in the comments of that unboxing video.

Ship with tracking and confirm receipt timing when possible. If a box lands during a holiday weekend or a period when the influencer is traveling, it might sit unopened for two weeks. A brief personal message before the box arrives – not a formal email, just a quick note – builds anticipation and increases the chance of a timely post.

Close The Loop After The Box Lands

Once you send the box, your job isn’t over. Track social mentions over the next few days. When they do post, comment. Don’t comment as your brand’s account – have a community manager write something personal if possible. Then, comment as yourself after the manager if you can.

Shoot them a quick direct message shortly after they post to thank them. Personal is better. This step right here is what turns a Hail Mary seeding push into a good relationship.

Repurpose that content if it works well enough. An unboxing video on their page has a lifespan. That same unboxing shared to your socials, email, or used in some paid social ad extends the value of the entire campaign well beyond the original post.

Remember – the PR box works best when it’s treated as the start of a conversation, not a transaction with a tracking number.
