How To Avoid Overfeeding Your Fish.

As far-fetched as this sounds, the number one killer of aquarium fish is overfeeding. So, one of the most important things you can do to make sure your fish is in great health is offering the right amount of food they require. If you’re not careful about their diet, they can develop various diseases. Placing too much food inside your aquarium isn’t only unhealthy for your fish, but it is also likely to make the water filthy. Fish waste and uneaten food will break down into ammonia over time, which is toxic to fish. Though aquarium filth is a pretty big hassle to deal with, it can be prevented by installing the best aquarium filter and frequently changing the water.  Here are some tips to help you avoid overfeeding your fish.

Weigh Food Before Giving It To Your Fish

The first step to avoiding overfeeding your fish is to get into the habit of weighing their food every time you feed them. That way, you’ll know for sure how much they’re getting. You can get a scale at any pet shop- just to make sure it goes up to at least 5 grams.

To know the right portion, you need to know the size of your fish. Thereafter,  you can make a chart of the correct food portions for different kinds of fish and observe them at periodic intervals to see if they’re healthy.

Feed On A Schedule

One of the biggest mistakes that people make is feeding their fish whenever they feel like it, instead of sticking to a schedule. That’s a recipe for disaster because if you have a schedule, your fish will be able to anticipate their food, and they’ll be able to digest it better. If you feed them more than they require, they’ll become more susceptible to disease. So, instead of feeding your fish whenever you feel like it, make sure you provide them with food at the same time every day.

Use An Automatic Feeder

One of the easiest ways to avoid overfeeding your fish is to use an automatic feeder. There are many brands on the market for you to choose from; it’s just a matter of picking one that you think will be efficient enough to avoid overfeeding. Automatic feeders will feed your fish reliably every day. You just fill it up before you leave, and when you get back to check your fish, they should be fed and happy. Some recommended fish feeders include ADA Automatic fish feed, Aquachef fish feed, and EHEIM battery-operated fish feeder.

Educate Family Members And “Fish-sitters”

If you have family members or friends who will be “fish-sitting” for you while you’re away, it’s essential to teach them how to avoid overfeeding your fish.  If your fish are being fed by someone else, they need to be told what the correct portion of food is and when and how often they should feed it. This is also important if you’ll be gone for an extended period of time, like on vacation.

Include Scavenging Inhabitants In Your Fish’s Aquarium

Scavengers are organisms that feed on the remains of dead organisms. They’re also known as detritivores. Scavengers are important for many reasons. They keep your tank clean by feeding on excess food that can potentially harm your fish. They also help control the population of pesky algae by feeding on algae. Some examples of scavenging inhabitants are catfish and loaches.

Make Sure There Are No Uneaten Foods Stuck To Decorations.

You should get rid of uneaten food by removing it with a net. You can take the tank decorations out, scrub them clean of any particles, and then put them back. You should do this at least once a week because if you don’t, then there will be excess food that just sits in the tank, waiting to be eaten by your fish. You can also use proper filtration to get rid of the leftover food.

There are many ways to avoid overfeeding your fish, but these are the easiest ways to do so. If you want to see your fish healthy, you need to follow these simple tips. However, if you’ve been feeding them right and it seems like their health is going down, or if they refuse to eat completely, you should consider getting professional help.
