How Often Should I Change My Maytag Refrigerator Water Filter?

Traditionally, Maytag recommends changing your water filter after every six months. However, there are different types of filters, and unless you’re a professional, don’t try to repair your washing machine yourself.

Types of Maytag Refrigerator Filters to Help You Know How Often You Should Change Yours

While the standard recommendation for a filter change is six months, other factors like consistent usage also determine when to change it so you’d enjoy pure water quality. Moreover, the below types of water filters determine how often you’d want to change yours:

  • Filters With Indicator Lights

If you’ve got a refrigerator with an indicator light, you’ll be able to tell when replacement is needed. Typically, you’ll want to change your filter when the light status on the temperature control alerts you. Usually, it’s designed to alert you when changes are needed.

  • Filters Without Indicator Lights

Suppose you’ve got a Maytag refrigerator without a light. In that case, you’ll need to stick to the recommendation of changing your filters after every six months or based on how frequently you use your refrigerator. Likewise, when you notice the ability of water flowing to the dispenser or ice maker reducing before six months, it’s an indication your filter needs replacement. However, you can rectify this problem by changing your refrigerator cartridge. Limited water flow to the ice maker and dispenser indicates that your filter is clogged hence demands replacement.

Signs Your Maytag Refrigerator Water Filter Needs to Be Changed

Generally, there are many ways to tell when your water softener without salt needs replacement. Moreover, the water filtration system plays an essential role in determining when to change your filter. Think about the musty smell and water tasting like you’ve fetched it from the tap. Additionally, other signs you’ll want to change the filter are when your refrigerator cannot make ice and low pressure on the water dispenser, or the ice you make smells terrible.

How to Correctly Change Your Filter

Once you’ve identified the cause of malfunctioning and decide to change your filter, the following guidelines will help you make the process successful.

Changing an Upper Right Corner Filter Model

For a start, make sure you open your filter from the right side. Once you’ve located it from the right side, go to the tab facing downwards and outward and push it out. Again, get the bottom tab and pull it near the cover you’ll see wrapped around next to it. Pull the cover downwards. When done, twist your filter in a counterclockwise direction.

The twisting should be done on your left-hand side, and also be sure to have pulled it out after a few rounds of twisting; however, if this is the first time you’re reinstalling or changing your filter. Also, make sure you fix the caps firmly in a counterclockwise direction. Again, align the filter with its accessories, such as the grooves, before completing the process. Make sure you’ve also inserted the grooves by turning them in clockwise directions firmly. Lastly, try the filter by running a few gallons of water before using it.

Changing a Grille Filter Model

If your filter is the base grille type, changing it is different from other models.  With this one, you’ll change it by locating the base from the front of your fridge. Likewise, make sure you twist the caps before fixing them firmly. Twist them until the handles are loose.  Open the handles and remove the filter to help you align the new one with its accessories.

Additionally, caps should come last. You’ll set them aside to start discarding the old filter and aligning the new one by removing things like covers and more. When done, open the filter you’re installing and get the caps on. Place caps vertical so you can quickly push the filter right in place. Also, make sure caps are installed through a clockwise rotation before firmly locking and changing the filter. When done, recheck if the refrigerator is working perfectly by running the water test. A few gallons work best, but the recommendation is to use at least four gallons.

In a nutshell, changing your water filter is paramount; considering using it for a long time will allow the entrance of contaminants and debris. These elements are health hazardous and can lead to water tasting bad. Moreover, when your filter is used past the recommended replacement time, you’ll suffer from smelling ice and filter clogs which can be expensive and bothersome to handle. Even better, make sure you’ve got guidelines from a professional Maytag fridge technician to help you go through the process effortlessly.
