How Can a Beginner Crack WBCS Exam in the First Attempt?

WBCS or West Bengal Civil Service conducts its civil service examination every year in three phases in various categories in West Bengal province. WBCS is conducted every year to recruit candidates for various posts around West Bengal State Service Commission of Group A, B, C, and D as civil services, assistant commissioner, food and supply, West Bengal police services, labour service, etc.

It systematically helps you analyse and segregate topics according to an individual’s strengths and weaknesses.

Eligibility for WBCS

The candidate must be a graduate from a recognised university with a 45 to 50% aggregate. They must be able to read, write, and speak in Bengali, and not have Nepali as their mother tongue, and should be well-versed with current events at national and international levels. The minimum age for Group A, B, and C posts is 36 years, whereas Group D’s requirement is 39 years.

Exam pattern for WBCS

The level of difficulty of the WBCS syllabus is medium to hard, with these three major sections:

• The prelims exam consists of General Studies I and General Studies II of 250 marks with a duration of 2 hours each.

• The main exam consists of Bengali, optional papers 1 and 2, with a set of general studies subject papers of your choice. Each paper consists of 150 marks with a time duration of 3 hours conducted on different days. It has 6 compulsory papers and 2 optional subjects for Group A and B posts.

• Lastly, the personality test ends with a viva that is related to academic interest, intelligence, general awareness, character, personality, and a few GK questionnaires. It is divided into Group A & B (200 marks), Group C (150 marks), and Group D (100 marks).

• Class X syllabus of general maths, languages, social sciences, and analytical questionnaire.

WBCS Syllabus

WBCS syllabus consists of the following subjects:

1.       English Composition

Synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, vocabulary questionnaire, phrasal verbs, homonyms, use of appropriate and qualifying words, etc.

2.       General science

General understanding and appreciation of sciences, matters of everyday experiences and their observation, impact on daily life, the study of scientific discipline, etc.

3.       Current events of national & international events

Awards, summits, conferences, the government started new schemes, updated news, books, and their authors, appointments, places in news, GI tags, its rankings with its reports, international relations, who’s who, important mountains, rivers, seas, and deserts, acronyms, etc.

4.       History

History of ancient and modern India with a broad understanding of social and economic aspects.

5.       Geography

Physical features, social, economic, and geography of the country and its state, main features of India’s agriculture, natural resources, states, etc.

6. India’s polity and economy

The political system, Indian constitution, Panchayati Raj, community development and planning commission, and its economic resources.

8.       Indian national movement

National leaders and their movements, ancient and modern history, growth of nationalism, before and after independence era, etc.

9.       Mental ability

Mental ability, logical reasoning, analytical understanding, logical perception, etc.

Tips to be followed by beginners for WBCS Exam

• A key to success is understanding your syllabus and creating a detailed study plan with the right set of books to gain conceptual ability.

For example, English – Wren & Martin, mental ability — RS Agarwal, history – Bipin Chandra, Geography – GC Leong. Follow NCERT books to build a thorough base of the concept.

• Solve at least the last 5 years’ paper to solve complex levels to face your competitors, with at least three hours per day for a better score.
