Flying Overseas? You Need Travel Vaccines

There is yellow fever that comes with a throbbing headache, nausea, and chills. Then there is cholera that can result in vomiting, diarrhea, or leg cramps. Don’t forget measles that can give you cough, fever, and a runny nose. And COVID19 that has taken the world on a roller coaster ride in the past couple of years.

These are just some of the illnesses that pose a risk to those who are flying overseas. Still, many jet-setters ignore getting vaccinated before traveling abroad. However, if you plan to travel to a new country, it is better to be safe than sorry. The reason is, some illnesses or infections could be more prevalent in other countries than in yours. Thus, getting vaccinated before your travel can help you prevent infections or passing it on to others.

Some common travel vaccines and medications

Based on where you plan to travel in the world, you should go through a travel vaccination guide so that you can receive mandatory travel vaccines. Though these diseases might not seem like an issue in the UK, you might be exposed to them somewhere else and transmit them to others.

Below are some illnesses you might contract while traveling cross-borders-

Yellow Fever

It is a common viral infection transmitted through mosquitoes. It causes fever, flu-like symptoms, and may also lead to jaundice, bleeding, or severe damage to major organs. There is no cure for infection; this is the reason why vaccination is recommended to prevent the illness.

Diphtheria

It is a bacterial infection that affects the throat and nose. Generally, this infection spreads via sneezes, coughs, or contact with an already infected person or their belongings. Diphtheria is commonly found in the Eastern Europe, The Caribbean, Asia, South Pacific, or The Middle East.

Malaria

Malaria is another travel-related illness caused by Plasmodium parasite, carried by mosquito Anopheles. These disease-causing mosquitoes are generally found in tropical and humid areas. Malaria comes with symptoms, like abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, sweating, or diarrhea. Unfortunately, there is no vaccination for malaria. Therefore, it is crucial to take anti-malarial tablets before traveling to any tropical area.

Meningococcal Disease

Though Meningococcal Disease is rare, it can be life-threatening. This disease is caused by Neisseria meningitidis bacterium and may spread through saliva or close contact with the infected person. The disease may even spread to the spine or brain; so, it is necessary to take preventative measures like vaccination before traveling abroad.

Some Routine Vaccines For International Travelers

When you plan to travel abroad, it is crucial to get travel vaccines. Likewise, you should also update your routine vaccination record. In addition, you may also receive immunity boosters to protect yourself from getting infected. The vaccinations might include Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, Influenza, Tetanus, Diphtheria, etc.

Travel clinics will not only provide you with necessary vaccines or medications, but also give you advice to ensure the prevention of infections. Besides receiving medicines and vaccines, you also need to consume healthy food and pure water. Also, whatever the country you are traveling to, it is good to research about the potential safety issues you may face and get in touch with the consulate to prepare accordingly.

Conclusion

Your health is the most precious asset you own. You want to keep yourself from unnecessary health risks, and stay healthy at home, as well as abroad. Therefore, travel vaccinations are something that you can’t ignore. In fact, they are an integral part of safe travel and enjoy your journey to the fullest. Not sure what vaccinations you need before your next trip? Talk to your doctor for recommendations!
