Fashion Mistakes That Can Ruin an Otherwise Good Outfit

Your colour choices are great, your silhouette works well, and your shoes match nicely — yet something is ‘off’ about your overall look.  This is usually due to one or more ‘small’ styling mistakes commonly seen in the following areas, which can sabotage an outfit, along with easy ways to fix them. For shoppers who like updating their wardrobe without overspending, coupon websites help track deals and coupon offers from multiple fashion retailers in one place.

1. Wearing the wrong fit (too tight or too baggy)

Fit: The fit of clothing is the core component of how clothing looks. If something fits too tightly, it will be evident that you are forcing it to fit on you; if an item fits too loosely, this will create a sloppy appearance.  Both will ultimately detract from the intention of your outfit.

How to Fix: Take the time to measure yourself properly, and then have your clothing altered so that it fits you properly. Even small changes, e.g., shortening pants or taking in a shirt, will transform mass produced items into custom fitting items.

2. Ignoring proportions

Proportion: The way that two or more pieces of clothing are designed to work together affects how they create balance in a look. Oversized tops can create swamp-like appearance when worn with wide-legged pants, while short skirts with oversized jackets can create distance and awkwardness in a person’s body.

How to Fix:  Apply the rule of thirds, i.e., if you want a voluminous top, pair it with fitted bottoms, or vice versa.

3. Bad underwear choices

Underwear: Undergarments that can be easily seen through clothing or that do not provide the right colour will break apart the clean lines and shape of a look.

How to Fix: Purchase seamless underwear, a supportive strapless or convertible bra, and beige/nude undergarments to match over the bridge of your nose.  It is a small investment with a large return.

4. Too many competing focal points

What’s wrong with it: Too many different items all demanding attention makes for an outfit with no clear weightiness.

How to fix it: Choose one key element- shoes, bags, or statement jewelry- and simplify everything else. Simple does not mean stale; it means curated.

5. Wearing worn-out or dirty shoes

What’s wrong with it: Scuffed shoes or worn out soles are a sign of neglect, regardless of how perfect the rest of your clothing may be.

How to fix it: Regularly clean and polish all leather, refresh all suede, and always keep a shoe cleaning kit on hand. Routinely rotate your pair of shoes to ensure that none of them look worn out.

6. Poor colour coordination

What’s wrong with it: Any colors that clash or compete create visually noisy and haphazard outfits.

How to fix it: Start with neutral colors and add one accent color. The color wheel can help with color selection; complementary or analogous colors are always safe choices.

7. Over-accessorizing or under-accessorizing

What’s wrong with it: Too many accessories create clutter, while too few create forgettable outfits.

How to fix it: Accessorize with a specific purpose. Most outfits can be accessorized with only three items (belts, watches, and one pair of earrings). If your look feels bland, upgrade one item (add a leather belt or a patterned scarf).

8. Wearing the wrong shoes for the outfit

When you’re trying to put together an outfit, you want to make sure everything is working together. A lot of times people will wear sneakers with suits, or wear stilettos with really baggy clothes. These two combinations are mismatched because the styles of shoes do not fit with the style of clothing. To make things easier for you, I have compiled a list of shoe options for each style of clothing, so you’re able to put together a great-looking outfit!

9. Neglecting garment care (wrinkles, pilling, stains)

What Makes This Look Bad – Quality garments become more affordable as they show signs of wear due to wrinkles and pilling.

How To Fix It – Always steam or iron any clothing prior to wearing. Additionally, you should always have a lint brush on hand, as well as a stain remover. A steamer is worth its weight in the confidence it gives you by making sure your clothes are always neat and wrinkle-free.

10. Chasing trends over personal style

What Makes This Look Bad – Trends are fun; however, clothing that does not fit your body shape and/or lifestyle looks absurd. This makes you seem fake rather than fashionable.

How To Fix It – When it comes to trends, use 1 or 2 of them in an outfit instead of using all of them. Build a basic wardrobe for your life, then incorporate seasonal trends into it.

Quick checklist before you step out

  • Fit checks in good daylight.
  • Only focus on one point of interest.
  • Ensure shoes are clean and suitable for the outfit.
  • Ideally, undergarments should not be visible beneath clothing.
  • Clothing should be ironed/steamed.
  • Clothing should have a blend of color and proportions.
