Beauty treatments are a major part of modern self-care, with millions of people choosing various options to enhance their appearance and boost confidence. Some methods are more effective than others. Let’s look at some popular treatments and whether they live up to their promises.
Microneedling
Microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) involves creating tiny punctures in the skin using fine needles. The process stimulates the natural wound-healing response, boosting collagen and elastin production. Microneedling has been shown to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines, and minimise acne scars. It’s more effective when combined with topical serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP). Plastic surgeon Dr Manish H. Shah told Healthline, “As with any minimally invasive procedure, the best results come to those patients who use microneedling as a part of a larger skin care and skin anti-aging regimen”.
Anti-wrinkle injections
Healthline describes injectable dermal fillers as “a popular and minimally invasive treatment for wrinkles.” Anti-wrinkle injections often treat areas like forehead lines, frown lines, smile lines, and crow’s feet. With their rise in popularity, you may have wondered: are anti-wrinkle injections effective? Heathline concluded that “Fillers do have measurable cosmetic benefits for your appearance.” Effects can last from 3-6 months and results may be seen within two weeks.
Laser resurfacing
Laser treatments use focused light energy to target specific layers of skin, addressing concerns like uneven tone, sun damage, and fine lines. Non-ablative lasers promote collagen remodelling without damaging the skin’s surface; ablative lasers offer deeper resurfacing for more dramatic results. Kristeen Cherney, PhD, writing for Healthline, concluded, “Individual results vary based on the extent of the initial concerns being treated. You can expect your results to last for several years once you’re done with your treatment sessions. However, the results aren’t permanent.”
Retinoids
Retinoids, which are derived from vitamin A, are used to improve skin texture, reduce acne, and minimise fine lines. Retinoids speed up cell turnover and boost collagen production, leading to smoother and more radiant skin over time. Regular use can improve skin health, but retinoids require consistent application and patience as results can take several months to appear. In the case of wrinkle treatment, WebMD advise, “It takes 3 to 6 months of regular use before improvements in wrinkles are seen, with best results happening after 6 to 12 months.” Pregnant women or those planning on becoming pregnant should avoid retinoids.
Other treatments
Other facial treatments include hydrafacial treatments, chemical peels (using acids to exfoliate and renew skin), LED light therapy, and oxygen facials. Body treatments include body contouring, cellulite reduction, and spray tanning.
For a positive experience
Some of these treatments are delicate in nature and should be performed by an experienced dermatologist. In the case of laser resurfacing, Cherney advises interviewing a few different dermatologists to ask questions such as, “What experience do you have with laser skin resurfacing?” and “How might my health affect the results? Is there anything I need to do ahead of time?” Find a dermatologist who is board-certified.
Are all beauty treatments worth it?
Effectiveness varies widely depending on the treatment, individual skin type, and underlying concerns. A dermatologist or licensed professional can recommend treatments tailored to your needs.
