Obesity is a burning issue that more and more people face nowadays. This is largely due to the modern conditions of everyday functioning, which include a sedentary lifestyle, spending a lot of time in front of various types of screens – TV, computer, smartphone – as well as a poor-quality diet rich in processed food and low in vegetables, fruits and natural products of animal origin. All this means that the percentage of people struggling with excess body fat is increasing, especially in developed countries.
Even though the situation is not the best, it does not mean that we are helpless in the face of it. There are many methods that can be used to combat obesity and the negative phenomena associated with it – both psychological, such as increased blood pressure or problems with walking, and mental, such as low self-esteem or even depression.
The first step, which is always recommended when fighting obesity or being overweight, is simply changing your lifestyle. Spending less time in a sitting position, devoting more time to physical activity, changes in the menu, intermittent fasting, reducing the number of calories – all this can bring positive effects in the fight against excess body fat.
Sometimes, however, the condition of an obese or overweight patient is so difficult that more serious measures need to be taken than just changes in the way of everyday functioning. Activities that are typically undertaken in such a context are related to procedures performed on the stomach. In the most radical cases, bariatric surgery is performed, which usually requires cutting out a piece of the stomach in order to shrink it and thus reduce the feeling of constant hunger, which pushes you to eat more meals.
However, not every patient is eligible for such a serious procedure as removing a piece of the stomach. Fortunately, this does not mean that nothing can be done in such a situation. On the contrary, there are many alternative methods of treatment that can also bring satisfactory results. One of them is the introduction of a special balloon into the stomach, which fills the organ and thus artificially induces a feeling of satiety, reducing appetite.
Another specific procedure that may produce positive results in some patients is Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty. It involves a part of the stomach being disabled by sewing access to one of its fragments, leaving it shaped like a sleeve. Everything is done endoscopically, without making any cuts, so it is a relatively non-invasive method. Therefore, it does not require long preparations or long convalescence. A patient who decides to undergo Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty can return home on the day of the procedure. In addition, after two or three days of rest, he is fully able to return to work and normal functioning.
The results achieved by patients after Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty are truly satisfactory. In most cases, weight loss of up to 20% can be achieved. Of course, this does not happen immediately – you have to wait at least a year for such results. Moreover, it should be added that even if the procedure is successful, it does not mean that there is no risk of recurrence of obesity. At a later stage, everything depends on the patient and whether he will return to negative habits or whether he will be able to permanently change both his diet and the way of everyday functioning. Only such an approach means success in the long run.
