Different Types Of Sushi Restaurants

Although sushi is a commonly known food item, best known for its roots in Japanese Cuisine, many people are unaware of the different kinds of sushi restaurants.

If you find yourself craving some authentic Japanese sushi, here is a list of the different kinds of sushi restaurants:

All-You-Can-Eat Sushi restaurants:

As the name suggests., these restaurants have an all-you-can-eat policy. It’s best when you don’t have to worry about eating on a budget since the bill can rake up to vast amounts if you’re craving a lot of sushi that day.

In most cases, these restaurants have time limits or are only hosted by restaurants once or twice a week. However, a few restaurants serve an all-you-can-eat menu 365 days a year.

Standing Sushi Bars:

This is also another type of sushi restaurant that’s very popular in Japan. Here, there are typically no tables for customers to sit on; they stand at the counter behind which the chefs make the food and serve it.

This is great for people who are always on the go and would like to stop for a quick small bite before heading to work. These places often go unnoticed because of their tiny construction, but when you find a good quality standing sushi bar, you’ll be surprised at the high-quality sushi plus the speed and convenience of these bars.

Take-Out Sushi Restaurants:

This is not a restaurant but can be considered a cloud restaurant where customers can place orders for sushi and have it home delivered. Although the whole idea of going to a sushi bar or restaurant is part of the omakase experience, those who are more comfortable having their meals at home can order take-out sushi.

This kind of cloud restaurant is also popular in the west, especially in cities like NYC, where the multicultural lifestyle has made it possible for such authentic Japanese cuisines to make their way into mainstream culture.

And although the city holds some of the best sushi restaurants, it can be hard to locate them, given their typically small sizes. So, you can search online and get the food delivered to your doorstep in no time at all.

High-End Sushi Restaurants:

Across the world, sushi is considered a luxurious experience made with the highest quality raw materials and the best chefs in the world. If you want to experience the whole deal, high-end sushi restaurants do the trick. These restaurants usually have anywhere from 13-14 up to 18-19 courses where guests are served different kinds of sushi.

Typically, these restaurants are designed, so the guests sit across from the chefs and watch them make the sushi. It’s a whole experience to watch their excellent knife skills and how they serve them.

The chefs pay close attention to each meal’s size, taste, and temperature, so you get the experience you are looking for. Not only is the taste fantastic but also the presentation of these meals. It’s truly an art form and an experience overall.

Whether traveling across New York City or living there, you can find some of the best high-end sushi restaurants run by top chefs worldwide. You’ll find some of the finest restaurants serving high-quality sushi to excite your taste buds.

Depending on market availability, high-end sushi restaurants typically use the highest quality fish, allowing them to change the menu as often as possible. The sides and dips that go with the sushi are also carefully curated so that it does not overwhelm your sense but creates a perfect balance to help savor the taste.

Conveyor Belt Sushi Restaurants:

This is a popular sushi restaurant that’s famous in Japan and in many other places across the globe. In Japan, it is called “kaiten zushi,” which translates to “rotating sushi.” The food is placed on a conveyer belt, and the restaurant is designed so the customers can sit facing the conveyor belt.

As the food comes near the customer’s table, they can grab the food as it comes. The sushi chefs stand behind the conveyor belts, make the sushi on the spot, and then place it on the belt to reach the customers.

Sushi Train:

In a similar tone, a new version of this conveyor belt system has become popular; where instead of having sushi dishes constantly revolving around the customers’ tables, all the orders are placed via a tablet by the customers. The chefs then make these orders and send them straight to their tables.

In these types of restaurants, you can place your orders using two different methods:

  • You either get issued a ticked at the counter before you enter the restaurant
  • Or you can check into the restaurant online through your phone

Ideally, if you’re running short of time, you can use your phone to make a reservation and check in so that you don’t have to wait in line for your turn.

These setups have a bar and counter sitting as well as booths. You’ll already have an array of dips and sauces to go with the sushi at your table. All you have to do is place your order.

This is a much more convenient way of serving sushi for those who want the experience with families or in large friend groups. You have the choice of sitting at a booth and enjoying a good conversation as you wait for the food to get delivered to your table.

In Conclusion:

A lot of etiquette goes into serving and eating sushi at a sushi restaurant, especially if you consider traditional Japanese decorum while feasting on these delicacies. So, learn them before you visit these places to have an authentic experience.
