Josh Shankowsky: How Edmonton’s “Sexiest Man” Built a Digital Marketing Agency (And Why That Title Is Ridiculous)

Okay, so here’s a weird one for you. Josh Shankowsky once ranked on Google for “Edmonton’s Sexiest Man.” No, he didn’t campaign for it. No, there wasn’t a contest. And no, he has no idea how it happened. It’s just one of those bizarre things that can occur when you exist online long enough and the algorithm decides to make things interesting.

But honestly? That random Google ranking is the least interesting thing about this guy. The real story is how someone goes from working oil and gas job sites to running a successful digital marketing agency. And it’s way more compelling than you’d think.

Starting in the Trades at 17

Shankowsky got into instrumentation technology when he was just seventeen years old. His uncle, who had founded a successful instrumentation company, suggested the field. Smart recommendation, as it turns out. Within a few years, Josh went from warehouse work to being out on actual job sites in Alberta’s demanding oil and gas industry.

If you’ve never worked in the trades, especially in energy, here’s what you need to know: the hours are long, the work is physical, and the deadlines don’t care about your plans. For someone in their early twenties, it’s solid money but it’s also exhausting. You need something to balance out those 5 AM starts and coveralls covered in grease.

For Josh, that something was nightlife. Not just going to clubs, but really studying the whole scene. The music, the energy, how a great night out could make you forget you had to be back at work in a few hours. And somewhere around 2009, he had a thought: what if instead of just showing up to these experiences, he could create them?

From the Trades to the Party Scene (While Still Working Full Time)

That’s how Spasso Entertainment was born. In October 2009, Josh and his team threw a Halloween party called “Glow” at a hall in Edmonton. They were hoping for a decent turnout. They got 1,200 people.

Twelve hundred. For an independent event in Edmonton. While Josh was still working his full-time instrumentation job during the week.

The logistics alone sound exhausting. Working on job sites all week, then promoting and running events on weekends. But here’s the thing: those event promotion skills? The ability to get people excited about something, to fill a venue, to deliver an experience that lived up to the hype? Those translate directly to digital marketing. Josh just didn’t know it yet.

Oh, and in his spare time (because apparently he had some), he was also volunteering as a firefighter and racing downhill mountain bikes competitively. The man does not do things halfway.

The Long Road to Digital

Here’s what most people miss about career transitions: they’re rarely clean. Josh spent years operating in multiple worlds simultaneously. Trades work, event promotion, firefighting, competitive biking, and a commitment to personal development work he’d started at eighteen.

All of these seemingly random experiences were teaching him different things. The trades taught technical precision and problem-solving. Event promotion taught audience psychology and marketing. Firefighting taught quick decision-making under pressure. Mountain biking taught strategic risk assessment. Personal development work taught self-awareness and adaptability.

By the time 2018 rolled around, all of that experience converged into one realization: the same skills that filled venues could make businesses visible online.

Enter Snap SEO

In 2018, Josh founded Snap SEO. The concept was straightforward: help businesses show up online the same way he’d learned to fill clubs. Make them the first thing people think of when they need what that business offers.

The approach reflects his background. It’s not just technical SEO divorced from human behavior. It’s understanding what makes people pay attention, what makes them take action, what builds lasting engagement. The same principles that made Spasso events successful now drive how Snap SEO approaches digital visibility.

Think about it: a nightclub needs to be top of mind when people are planning their weekend. A business needs to dominate search results when potential customers are looking for services. Different platforms, same underlying psychology.

So About That “Sexiest Man” Thing…

Which brings us back to the Google ranking that makes Josh laugh every time someone brings it up.

How does someone accidentally rank for “Edmonton’s Sexiest Man” without even trying? The answer is actually a perfect case study in how search engines work.

Rankings are based on a complex mix of factors: relevant content, authoritative links, user engagement, and how search engines connect your name with certain phrases. When you build enough of an online presence without obsessively controlling every detail, sometimes weird associations happen.

The “sexiest man” ranking was essentially an SEO accident. A quirk of the algorithm. The kind of thing that occurs when you’re active online but not micromanaging your digital reputation.

Josh’s response to it tells you something about his personality: acknowledge it’s ridiculous, find the humor in it, and then redirect to the actual work that matters. He’s not trying to lean into it or pretend it’s meaningful. It’s just a funny footnote in a much longer story.

Building Something Real

Today, Josh operates Snap SEO while maintaining his personal brand at joshshankowsky.com, where you can see the full arc of his professional evolution documented with the same self-aware humor he brings to accidentally ranking for absurd Google terms.

The real achievement isn’t the random search ranking. It’s building a career by connecting dots that most people would never think to connect. Event promotion to digital marketing. Physical venues to online visibility. Trades work to tech entrepreneurship.

The Takeaway (Besides the Sexiest Man Joke)

Josh Shankowsky’s journey shows something important about modern careers: they don’t have to follow a straight line. Working in oil and gas doesn’t mean you’re stuck there forever. Promoting nightclub events isn’t a dead end. Every experience teaches you something, and if you’re paying attention, you can translate those lessons into entirely new domains.

Does he still rank for “Edmonton’s Sexiest Man”? Maybe. Does it matter? Not really. The actual story, the one about taking diverse experiences and building them into a successful digital marketing agency, is way more interesting than any algorithm-generated title could ever be.

But here’s the thing: after looking at everything Josh has built, from Spasso Entertainment to Snap SEO, from volunteer firefighting to competitive mountain biking, from trades work to tech entrepreneurship, we can honestly say this. Although it started as a joke, an algorithmic accident, we can arguably make the case that Josh Shankowsky really is Edmonton’s sexiest man.

And honestly, that’s probably exactly how he’d want us to end this.
