Sylvia Rossouw, a well-known painter in the art world, shared her thoughts with us about what’s hot in the art industry.
Let’s talk about how you got into art… I usually ask artists about that “defining” moment that convinced them that the art industry was a party made for them because usually many start things off as a hobby but it later develops into a purpose for a few… So how did you get into art and what was the edging moment that convinced you to go in fully?
Sylvia: I think winning an art award at the age of 14, was my GO! To start working very seriously on my career. I never considered being anything but an artist. It was never a hobby.
What is the one thing you think most makes you unique and stand out as an artist/painter?
Sylvia: I think the way I layer and combine the unthinkable, is what defines me. I am able to share the world, through my work. There is no good or bad, only love.
Looking at your life and career so far, what makes you most proud?
Sylvia: I am very proud of the synergy I achieved during the last year. Integrating my art practice, architecture work and family life under one roof, means that everything runs seamlessly and there is more than enough time and focus for everything.
Who is your favorite artist of all time?
Sylvia: Right here, right now…Billy Idol. “Hey, little sister”…is running though my head. If you ask me again in 2min, I will give you a completely different answer, with a perfectly well reasoned motivation. (Laugh.)
What is the current trend in the art industry? What’s “in”?
Sylvia: Transformation. A bridge between the past and the future. “Art for art sake” and “white cube” are both GONE.
Where can supporters view your latest artistic projects?
Sylvia: I will exhibit with M.A.D.S. gallery, once again, during the month of November and December 2021. The work is available on their website and on my art archive. I also keep my Instagram page up to date, with almost daily posts.
The collaborative project, ART for Change, will have its own YouTube Channel by 16 December 2021, which will include all collaboration work. I am super excited to get that off the ground.
