5 Ways To Run A Greener Household

With the rise of dangers to our planet and a necessity for a more sustainable way of living, it is important that we all do our bit to help. Changing the way you live and operate at home is a great way to start. We’ve put together a list of the little changes you can make that will actually contribute to making a difference in the world. They may seem small but together, the impact can be mighty. Find out what you can do below.

  1. Switch Out Your Cleaning Products

The main issue with cleaning products is the number of chemicals they contain. Whilst harsher products are sometimes necessary to do a thorough clean and disinfection of areas such as kitchens and bathrooms, they can also pollute water supplies and rivers, causing harm. The good news is there are plenty of more natural alternatives on the market which means you don’t have to compromise on cleanliness. If you’re looking for the real deal to remove a whole ton of grime, look for industrial-strength products such as the range of eco friendly commercial cleaning products by Shorrock Trichem.

  1. Recycle – Properly

If you fear taking the zero waste path, then you should at least be recycling. Most households recycle, but often don’t actually do it properly, rendering all of that time separating glass from paper is fruitless. Before you check an empty jar of sauce or bottle of fizz into your recycling bin, ensure that it has been rinsed and cleaned out, with no residue or liquid left inside. Make sure that you remove the labels on the jars and dispose of them in the waste bin. Peel stamps and adhesive strips off of envelopes and perform the scrunch test before you toss. The recyclable paper will stay scrunched, whereas non-recyclable paper will unfurl again.

  1. Invest In Solar Panels

Although the UK doesn’t get a whole load of sunshine it is worth investing in solar panels for your home as they can still generate power even on those miserable winter days! Reducing your usage of non-renewable energy sources will only be helpful to the planet and is a smart way to future-proof your home. Although they can cost a lot to install, you’ll eventually save money on your bills which is a bonus!

  1. Cut Down On Your Heating Use

Whilst winters can be cold, try and resist cranking up the heating by using alternative ways to keep warm such as adding extra layers of clothing or snuggling up under a blanket when you’re chilling out at home. With gas prices rising, your bank balance will also thank you for making this little cutback.

  1. Buy A Water Filter

If you can’t stand the taste of tap water (hello England’s hard water areas!) and often pick up bottles of water at the supermarket buy a water filter jug instead. Simply fill it up from your tap, pop it in the fridge, and voila! You’ll have fresh, cold, tasty water in no time, without collecting hoards of difficult to recycle plastic bottles.
